Coorg is an administrative district in Karnataka, India. Before 1956 it was an administratively separate Coorg State, at which point it was merged into an enlarged Mysore State.

Madikeri Fort



Madikeri Fort was first founded by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century. He also built a palace inside the fort. It was eventually rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named the site as Jaffarabad. In 1790, Dodda Vira Rajendra took control of the fort. The British who added to the fort in 1834. The palace was renovated by Linga Rajendra II in 1812–1814. In the north-east corner at the entrance are two life size masonry elephants and a church is present in the south-east corner. The building now houses the Madikeri Fort Museum, managed by the Karnataka State Archaeological Department.


Raja’s Seat

The Raja’s Seat is a beautiful scenic place towards the south of Madikeri Fort with wonderful views of the valleys of Western Ghats. This is a top tourist place to visit in Coorg an also a famous sunset point in Madikeri. The Raja’s Seat, which means the Seat of Kings, is a brick and mortar structure with four pillars connected by arches.

Abbey Falls

Abbey Falls is in Kodagu, in the Western Ghats in Karnataka. It is located 8 km from the Madikeri, 268 km from Bangalore and 122 km from Mysore. The river is part of the early reaches of the river Kaveri. Flow is much higher during the monsoon season. The waterfall is located between private coffee plantations with stocky coffee bushes and spice estates with trees entwined with pepper vines. A hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls. From Coorg the waterfall is accessible by a well laid road till the coffee estate gate. Thereon, a small trek through the coffee and spices plantations leads to the waterfalls. The roar of the falls can be heard from the road.

Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare is known for its elephant camp, a forest camp on the banks of the river Kaveri in the district of Kodagu, Karnataka. It is an important base for the Karnataka Forest Department’s elephants. The elephants for the Mysore Dussehra were trained at Dubare elephant camp[citation needed]. At present, after logging operations have ceased, the elephants have been practically retired except for giving some rides to tourists. In addition to the elephant training camp, Nisargadhama and Veerabhoomi are the other main attractions of the forest area. There are opportunities for trekking, elephant rides, fishing, and river rafting. These activities are hosted by jungle lodges and resorts. The Forest Department also conducts some treks along well-defined routes.

Golden Temple

Golden Temple or Namdroling Monastery is a beautiful Buddhist Monastery situated at Bylakuppe. It is one of the most popular tourist places to visit in Coorg. Bylakuppe is the second largest Tibetans settlement in India after Dharamshala.

Tadiyandamol Peak

Tadiandamol is the highest mountain of Kodagu district, Karnataka, India. It is the third highest peak in Karnataka. It is located Western Ghats range, and reaches an elevation of 1,748 m. The mountain has patches of shola forests in the valleys. The Nalaknad (also known as Nalnad — meaning 4 villages) palace at the foothills is an important historical landmark. This was one of the landmarks mapped during the Great Trigonometric Survey. It is a place of interest for trekkers and naturalists. The climb to the top and back can be completed as a day hike; but it is also a good location for overnight camping.

Talacauvery

Talakaveri is the place where the River Kaveri originates. The temple on the riverbanks here is dedicated to lord Brahma, and is one of only two temples dedicated to Brahma in India and Southeast Asia. Bhagamandala is situated at the Sangam (confluence) of two rivers, the Kaveri and the Kanika. A third river, the Sujyothi, is said to join from underground, and hence this spot is called the Triveni Sangam. It is one of the best Coorg Tourist Places to visit.
